If you are staying in Marrakech, taking a day trip to the coastal town of Essaouira is an absolute must. Known as the "Windy City of Africa," it offers a relaxed vibe, beautiful ocean views, incredible fresh seafood, and an old Medina that fans of Game of Thrones will instantly recognize!
Option 1: The Public Bus (Supratours or CTM)
- The Pros: It is cheap. A one-way ticket costs around 80 to 100 MAD (about Quote-Quote). The buses are generally clean and air-conditioned.
- The Cons: You are on a strict schedule. You have to pay for a taxi from your Riad to the bus station in Marrakech, wait in line, and sit on a crowded bus. The bus makes one quick stop at a busy rest stop, but you cannot pull over to take photos of the famous "Goats in the Argan Trees" (yes, goats literally climb trees here!).
Option 2: A Private Guided Trip
- The Pros: Total freedom and comfort. Your driver picks you up directly from your Riad in Marrakech. You control the AC and the music. More importantly, you can stop wherever you want! We always stop to see the tree-climbing goats and visit a local women's Argan oil cooperative to see how "Moroccan liquid gold" is made.
- The Cons: It costs a little more than the public bus, but the value and time saved are huge.
Practical notes
- Book the day before in high season; morning buses sell out.
- Sit on the right side going west for ocean glimpses near the coast.
- Keep your return ticket and note the departure bay — stations are busy.
- Private wins for groups of 3+: similar per-person cost, door-to-door, your schedule.
