Atlas Mountains

Amazigh valleys, cold rivers and high passes under snow — the mountains behind Marrakech and the homeland of our founding guide.

The High Atlas Mountains

Amazigh villages, waterfall valleys and snow-capped peaks a stone’s throw from Marrakech — plus deeper expeditions to Imilchil and the lakes of the founder’s home country.

The High Atlas is Morocco’s great mountain barrier between the Atlantic plains and the Sahara. An hour from Marrakech you reach the Ourika Valley — terraced fields, the Setti Fatma waterfall trail and Amazigh guesthouses in the oaks.

Further into the range, around Imilchil in the central High Atlas, you find the ancestral home of our founder Abdellah: the two sacred lakes of Isli and Tislit, the high summit of Mount Bab N’Ouayad (2,804m) and the September Festival of the Bride — the famous July/August Imilchil wedding festival. These are among our most personal routes, guided by a Amazigh who grew up among these valleys.

“These are my mountains. When I bring travellers home to Imilchil, it is not a tour — it is a welcome.” — Abdellah, founder & Amazigh guide

Who are the Atlas Mountains for?

The Atlas suits travelers who want more than cities and desert — hikers, nature lovers, photography enthusiasts and anyone interested in Amazigh culture. It works as a day trip from Marrakech, a multi-day trek, or a longer expedition into the central High Atlas around Imilchil.

How long to stay in the Atlas Mountains?

1 day for the Ourika Valley from Marrakech. 2–3 days for Imlil and the Toubkal region. 4–5 days for the Imilchil lakes and central Atlas expedition. Many travelers combine Atlas days with Marrakech and the Sahara in a single itinerary.

How to get to the Atlas Mountains

To Marrakech: Ourika Valley is 1 hour by road. Imlil (Toubkal trailhead) is 1.5 hours. To Fes or Meknes: Ifrane and the Middle Atlas are 1–2 hours. Private transport with Abrid is the most comfortable option — drivers know the mountain roads and can combine stops along the way.

What to see in the Atlas Mountains

The Setti Fatma waterfalls in the Ourika Valley, the Imlil Valley with views of Toubkal (4,167m), the Amazigh villages of the High Atlas, the sacred lakes of Isli and Tislit near Imilchil, and the September Imilchil wedding festival — one of Morocco's most famous cultural events.

What to do in the Atlas Mountains

Hike to waterfalls in the Ourika Valley, trek to the summit of Toubkal (2 days), visit Amazigh guesthouses, attend the Imilchil wedding festival in September, explore mountain souks, or simply enjoy the cool air and panoramic views from a rooftop terrace.

Typical Atlas Mountains itinerary

Day trip: Marrakech → Ourika Valley → Setti Fatma waterfalls → Amazigh village lunch → return. 3 days: Marrakech → Imlil → Toubkal base camp → summit attempt → return. 5 days: Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Imilchil lakes → Bab N'Ouayad → return.

Local advice from Abrid

Mountain weather changes fast — bring layers even in summer. The Ourika Valley is best in spring when waterfalls are at their strongest. For Imilchil, September is ideal for the festival but book accommodation early. Always hike with a local guide — trails are unmarked and weather can turn quickly. Our founder Abdellah grew up in these mountains and personally guides the Imilchil routes.
