No trip to Morocco is complete without experiencing the quiet majesty of the Sahara Desert. The rolling dunes stretching infinitely into the horizon, the deep silence of the night, and the glowing campfire beneath a sky blanketed in stars — it is a transformative experience.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) vs Zagora
When booking a tour to the Sahara from Marrakech, you will usually be offered two destinations: Zagora or Merzouga.
Zagora is a 2-day, 1-night trip. It is closer, but the desert here is flat and rocky with very few sand dunes. Only choose it if you have extremely limited time.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is a 3-day, 2-night trip. This is the Sahara you are dreaming of. The dunes tower over 150 meters high and glow a deep orange in the sunset light. We exclusively run tours to Merzouga because it is vastly superior.

Many travelers picture sleeping on thin mats under the stars. While that's romantic, modern luxury desert camps (like the ones we use in our tours) offer a completely different level of comfort:
- Private, spacious canvas tents with real beds and premium mattresses
- En-suite bathrooms with running water and hot showers
- Gourmet Moroccan dinners served under lantern light
- Berber music and storytelling around the fire
What to Pack for the Sahara
Packing for the desert requires preparing for extreme temperature shifts. Here are the essentials:
- Layers! The desert is scorching in the day but near freezing at night in winter. Bring a warm jacket.
- A headscarf (Cheich). Not just for photos — it protects your face from sand and wind during the camel ride.
- Closed-toe shoes. Sandals are fine for the camp but you'll want solid shoes for climbing the dunes.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and sunglasses. The desert sun is intense even in winter.
- Wet wipes and a power bank. Camp electricity can be limited!
The Drive from Marrakech
Merzouga is about 10 hours from Marrakech — but the drive is one of the best parts! You will cross the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at the ancient mud-brick fortress of Ait Benhaddou (where Gladiator was filmed), and pass through the spectacular sheer walls of the Todra Gorge. The road trip is just as important as the destination.
Best Time to Visit the Sahara
The best months are October–April when temperatures are comfortable (15–25°C during the day). Summer (June–August) is extremely hot (45°C+) and not recommended. Spring and autumn offer the perfect balance of warmth and comfort.
