A Complete Guide to the Sahara Desert Tour
The Sahara Desert is one of the most magical places on Earth. A visit to the dunes of Merzouga or Zagora is a highlight of any Morocco trip. Here's everything you need to know.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer pleasant temperatures. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter nights are cold but still manageable.
How to Get There
Most desert tours depart from Marrakech. The drive to Merzouga takes about 9 hours, often with stops in the Atlas Mountains and Dades Valley. We recommend a multi-day tour to break up the journey.
The Camel Trek Experience
You'll ride a camel to the desert camp, usually taking about an hour. The camels are gentle and guided by experienced locals. You'll watch the sunset from the top of a dune – an unforgettable moment.
Desert Camp
Traditional Berber camps offer comfortable tents with mattresses, blankets, and sometimes even private bathrooms. Evenings include dinner, music around the campfire, and stargazing.
What to Pack
- Comfortable clothes (light layers)
- Warm jacket for night (desert gets cold!)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat
- Scarf or bandana (to protect from sand)
- Comfortable shoes for walking
- Camera (sunset shots are incredible)
