If you're planning a trip to Morocco, spending a night under the stars in the Sahara Desert is probably at the very top of your bucket list. And trust me—as someone who has guided hundreds of travelers through the dunes of Merzouga—it absolutely lives up to the hype!

1. A Light Scarf (The Cheche)

You will see locals wearing long turbans, and it's not just for style! A lightweight cotton scarf will protect your face, nose, and mouth from the sun and any wind-blown sand during your camel trek. (Don't worry if you don't have one; you can buy a beautiful Amazigh scarf on the drive down to the desert for very cheap).

2. Layers, Layers, Layers!

The biggest mistake tourists make is only packing shorts and t-shirts. The Sahara can drop to near-freezing temperatures at night, especially between November and March. Bring a warm fleece or light jacket for the evening campfire, and breathable, loose clothing for the daytime heat.

3. Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer

Most luxury camps (like the ones we use) have fully functioning showers and ensuite bathrooms. However, out in the dunes, dust gets everywhere. Having wet wipes in your day bag is a lifesaver to freshen up after a long camel ride.

4. A Power Bank

Your desert camp will have electricity to charge your phone, but during the long drive through the Atlas Mountains, you'll be taking hundreds of photos and videos. A portable charger is a must so you don't miss the perfect sunset shot!

5. Closed-Toe Shoes

Sandals are great for the camp, but when you are climbing the massive dunes to watch the sunrise, sneakers or light hiking boots are much better. The sand can get quite hot during the day, and shoes give you better grip.

Practical notes

  • Test your bag weight before flying; desert camps mean small tents, not wardrobes.
  • Leave room for purchases — dates, scarves and pottery find you.
  • Refill water at camps and riads; carry more than you think.
  • Label your bag; every camp has ten identical duffels.
