What to Pack for the High Atlas
The complete mountain list: layers, footwear, sun, water and cash — everything for days above 2,000 metres.
Mountain weather makes its own rules: freezing dawns, fierce midday sun, and villages with no shops. Pack for all of it in one small bag and the High Atlas becomes easy.
Clothing: dress in layers
- Base + warm mid-layer — thermal or fleece even in summer; nights above 2,000 m are cold year-round.
- Windproof and waterproof shell — mountain wind and sudden showers, spring and autumn especially.
- Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — the high-altitude sun burns fast, even when the air feels cool.
- Modest village clothing — cover shoulders and knees in villages; a light scarf is versatile.
- Warm hat and gloves — October to April, and for any summit attempt.
Footwear: the one non-negotiable
Sturdy walking shoes or light boots with real grip — lakeshore paths, gorge tracks and village lanes are uneven and sometimes loose. Break them in before you come. Sandals stay at the lodge.
Daypack essentials
Refillable water bottle, headlamp, personal medication, blister plasters, power bank, dry bag for electronics — and cash in dirhams. Beyond Azilal there are effectively no ATMs and almost nowhere takes cards.
Leave behind / know before
- Heavy suitcases — soft duffels fit mountain vehicles and gîtes far better.
- Connectivity expectations — signal comes and goes; download offline maps and tell family you may be unreachable.
- Drone use — ask your guide first; villages are private spaces, not film sets.
- Single-use plastic — bring the bottle, skip the waste; lakeshores are fragile wetlands.
