Ait Benhaddou

The most photographed fortification in the south — earthen towers, lantern-lit alleys and movie-star backdrops on the road to the Sahara.

Ait Benhaddou – The Kasbah Fortress

The most famous fortified village in Morocco — a UNESCO-listed ksar of earthen towers on every Sahara crossing.

The Ksar of Ait Benhaddou is a perfectly preserved fortified village of clay towers rising above the Ounila River — the classic image of southern Morocco. It has stood as a stage since the 1980s: Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones and dozens of films were shot among its walls.

The stroll up through the granaries and alleys takes under an hour, ending on the old storehouse terraces with a view over the valley. Because our Sahara crossings pass this way, nearly every desert tour stops here — it is the ideal first taste of earthen Moroccan architecture before the dunes.

“Travellers arrive expecting a film set and find a living village. Grandparents, granaries and the whisper of every caravan that has passed this way.” — Abdellah, founder & Amazigh guide
