Todra: The Great Gorge

Towering limestone walls, world-class climbing and a river walk through the canyon — Todra is the south's most dramatic hour.

Walls that stop the road

The Todra river cut a corridor through the Atlas limestone, and the road runs straight into it — walls rising hundreds of metres on both sides, narrowing until the sky is a strip. Climbers know Todra worldwide for its bolted routes; walkers know it for the easy river path through the cool of the canyon.

Todra pairs with the Dades Valley in one shared driving day, on every southern route toward Merzouga. For the combined picture, see our Todra & Dades route overview.

Highlights

  • Canyon walk — the river path through the narrows.
  • Climbing — bolted sport routes for experienced climbers.
  • Viewpoints — the gorge mouth at golden hour.
  • Tinghir palmeraie — the green valley below the walls.
  • Local crafts — carpets and silver in the gorge villages.
How we recommend experiencing Todra. Walk the narrows in the cool of the morning, climb if you climb, lunch in Tinghir. How long: two to three hours in the gorge, usually inside a Dades–Todra driving day. What travellers miss: the palmeraie below — most visitors see the walls and skip the green valley. How we connect it: Dades ? Todra ? Merzouga runs the classic desert approach.

Good to know

How to get there

The gorge lies just north of Tinghir, reached by road from the Dades Valley or from Merzouga. Buses and grand taxis serve Tinghir; the gorge itself needs a car. With Abrid, the walk and the viewpoints are timed into your southern day.

How long to stay

We recommend two to three hours for the canyon walk, usually inside a wider driving day. Climbers stay longer — tell us and we arrange it.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are generally ideal; the canyon shade softens summer heat, and winter mornings are crisp and clear.

The gorge is a serious sport-climbing venue; beginners should arrange instruction in advance. Tell us your level when planning and we check options honestly.
