Midelt, Morocco: The Mountain Town Between Atlas and Sahara

One of the most interesting side-stops in eastern Morocco — and far more than a stopover on the road to the dunes.

Midelt is one of the most interesting side-stops in eastern Morocco on a journey from the Atlas mountains toward the Sahara desert. Sitting in the gap between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas, Midelt occupies a strategic position between northern Morocco, Errachidia, Ziz Valley and the desert around Merzouga.

Where Is Midelt, Morocco?

Midelt is a town in Midelt Province, part of the Drâ-Tafilalet region in central-eastern Morocco.

It is located on the highlands between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas, and its mountainous setting means temperatures are generally cooler than in the major destinations further south.

The road from Midelt heads south toward Errachidia and the Ziz Valley, then toward the desert and Merzouga.

This makes Midelt a logical stop on routes like Fes–Azrou–Midelt–Errachidia–Merzouga or Marrakech–High Atlas–Ouarzazate–Errachidia–Midelt.

Midelt and the Atlas Mountains

One of the most interesting aspects of Midelt is its location between two major mountain ranges.

Travellers heading from the north into the Middle Atlas see a gradual transition from the forested landscapes of the Middle Atlas toward the wilder scenery of the High Atlas.

The road around Midelt is therefore an important part of any Atlas Mountains tour.

Rolling plateaus, valleys, mountain villages and agricultural areas lead into the more extreme desert terrain further south.

Midelt and Apple Orchards

Another notable aspect of Midelt is its association with apple growing. The highland climate and agricultural focus make fruit growing a major industry in the region.

Travellers visiting Midelt in the right season can see orchards and farms, a surprising contrast to the usual Moroccan landscapes associated with the southeast of the country.

A Gateway Toward the Sahara

Most travellers first encounter Midelt on a route toward the Sahara. It is common to see it recommended simply as a stop-over on the way from northern Morocco toward Merzouga and the Sahara.

However, that is a shame, since the road trip through Midelt is also one of transition from the mountain landscapes of the north toward the desert south.

It is an interesting area to explore for those on a Morocco Sahara tour from Marrakech or Fes, offering a different perspective on the road to the desert.

Midelt and Local Mountain Life

The natural environment around Midelt has created conditions for agricultural life, pastoralism and mountain villages.

The area and surrounding Atlas mountains form an important part of Morocco's Amazigh cultural landscape.

Travellers interested in Amazigh Morocco can use Midelt as a gateway toward the less-explored parts of the east.

What Can You Explore Around Midelt?

Midelt is a great place to stop or spend the night while exploring different parts of eastern Morocco. Depending on the route, the next destinations after Midelt could be Er-Rich, Errachidia, the Ziz Valley, Imilchil, Lake Isli, Lake Tislit, the High Atlas, and Merzouga and the Sahara.

This makes Midelt particularly useful for custom itineraries in Morocco.

Midelt for Travellers Who Want More Than the Classic Morocco

Morocco is a country with strong contrasts between its major cities, its desert landscapes and its mountainous heart. Midelt is one of the best places to see a different side of the country.

While most travellers would recognise Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen and Essaouira as ‘Morocco’, few would think of a mountain village in the east.

That makes Midelt an interesting destination for those who want to connect different parts of the country.

Best Way to Experience Midelt

When exploring Midelt, we recommend not hurrying from the town toward Merzouga, but instead spending some time observing the landscapes and villages around Midelt.

A road trip in this part of eastern Morocco is more about the journey than the destination, and this is where Abrid Morocco specialises. We design your Morocco itinerary to help you see and understand the landscapes and cultures of this fascinating country.

Midelt Travel Guide

If you are planning a road trip in Morocco's Atlas Mountains and Sahara, we recommend including Midelt in your Morocco Atlas Mountains itinerary, and possibly extending your trip to include less-known but scenically beautiful destinations like Imilchil, Isli and Tislit in the eastern High Atlas.

Midelt is not an end, but the beginning of a journey toward other horizons.

Getting the best from Midelt

  • Do not rush through: the orchards and villages around town are the reason to stop, not the town centre itself.
  • Season matters: fruit growing is at its most visible in and after the harvest season.
  • Cooler than the south: highland location means noticeably cooler evenings than Merzouga.
  • Pair it: Midelt works well combined with Er-Rich, Errachidia or Imilchil.
