Meknes: The Quiet Imperial City

Monumental gates, a sultan's mausoleum and Roman Volubilis next door — imperial Morocco without the crowds.

Empire on a human scale

Of Morocco's four imperial cities, Meknes is the calmest — Sultan Moulay Ismail made it his capital and ringed it with walls, gates and granaries on a scale meant to rival Versailles. The medina is compact, the monuments are close together, and the pace is noticeably slower than Fes, an hour east.

Meknes also unlocks Volubilis, Morocco's great Roman site, sitting in the hills nearby with its mosaics and triumphal arch. Pair the two in a single day, add the Middle Atlas cedar forests or Chefchaouen, and the imperial north is covered.

Highlights

  • Bab Mansour — the monumental gate, Morocco's most famous.
  • Moulay Ismail Mausoleum — the sultan's decorated resting place.
  • Volubilis — Roman mosaics and arches in the nearby hills.
  • Heri es-Souani granaries — the vast royal storehouses and stables.
  • Medina souks — calmer and easier than Fes or Marrakech.
How we recommend experiencing Meknes. Morning at Bab Mansour and the mausoleum, midday out to Volubilis for the mosaics in the best light, evening back in the medina. How long: one full day covers Meknes and Volubilis together. What travellers miss: the granaries — most visitors walk past them. How we connect it: Fes ? Meknes/Volubilis ? Rabat is the natural imperial line south.

Good to know

How to get there

Meknes sits on the main rail line, with direct trains from Fes, Rabat and Casablanca; Volubilis is a short drive from the city. With Abrid, your driver handles the city, the ruins and the onward road in one flow.

How long to stay

We recommend one full day for Meknes plus Volubilis. Most travellers sleep in Fes or continue to Rabat.

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are generally the most pleasant; Volubilis is best in morning light outside summer midday heat.

Meknes questions

Is one day enough for Meknes?

Yes — the monuments are close together, and Volubilis fits in the same day. Stay a night only if you want the medina at a slower pace.

Can I see Volubilis from Fes?

Yes, it is a common day trip from Fes via Meknes. Tell us and we sequence Fes ? Meknes ? Volubilis ? Rabat in one smooth line. Plan it here.

How is Meknes different from Fes?

Calmer, smaller and more monumental — Moulay Ismail's gates and granaries rather than the deep maze of the Fes medina. Most travellers visit both.
