Where Is Lake Isli?

Lake Isli is a beautiful high-mountainous lake in the eastern High Atlas near Imilchil, Morocco. The landscape in which the lake is set is equally impressive.

While one could say that the journey to the lake is part of the experience, it is not a journey to a luxury resort – more a natural landscape with the mountainous surroundings and the villages of the region.

Isli and the Aït Hdiddu

The region of Imilchil is famous for being the home of the Aït Hdiddu, an Amazigh tribe of the eastern High Atlas mountains in Morocco.

In fact, the entire region, including the high-mountainous landscape around Lake Isli with its valleys and plateaus, is part of the cultural heritage of the Amazigh people.

It is part of a unique landscape in which, for centuries, pastoralism, agriculture, oral poetry and seasonal migrations have been part of everyday life.

And it is exactly this uniqueness that makes this place so special and worth visiting.

The Legend of Isli and Tislit

Lake Isli and the neighbouring Lake Tislit are linked by the most famous legend of Imilchil – the love story of Isli and Tislit.

According to the legend, the lovers belonged to families that were opposed to their relationship. Because of this, the lovers wept bitterly – so much that their tears transformed into the two lakes.

This touching love story is definitely worth knowing when visiting Imilchil – but keep in mind that the tale should be seen as part of the Amazigh oral tradition rather than a scientific explanation of how the lakes were formed.

What Does Science Say About Lake Isli?

Actually, science says that the traditional legend bears little resemblance to the actual formation of Lake Isli.

Scientific research has examined the geological setting of Lake Isli and the surrounding area of the eastern High Atlas, focusing on tectonic and karstic features.

In short: science and tradition can live side by side – in this case, even on the same mountain plateau. While the cultural heritage of Morocco’s High Atlas region is unique and valuable, so is its natural heritage.

One thing is certain: both the scientific and the traditional background of Lake Isli are as fascinating as they are unique.

Lake Isli and Lake Tislit

Not only are the two lakes geographically close to each other, they also share a common cultural background.

A visit to the two lakes – Isli and Tislit – is highly recommended for anybody looking to explore the region around Imilchil and its unique cultural heritage.

So rather than going to just one of the lakes, here is why a combined visit to the two is so very much better.

The High Atlas Landscape

Depending on the time of year, you will see completely different views of the High Atlas landscape around Lake Isli.

While summer can bring cloudless days and clear views of the mountains, winter can make travelling in the region quite challenging.

But these conditions are what make this part of Morocco so unique – a world apart from the capital city of Rabat or the famous Marrakech.

The view over the mountains around Isli is so beautiful that many of our guests have returned to us to tell us how amazing the experience was.

Isli for Off-the-Beaten-Path Travellers

What we like about Lake Isli is that it offers something different to the usual Morocco tour.

The usual Morocco tour will take you to the famous Marrakech, Fes, the Sahara and Essaouira, maybe also to Chefchaouen and the Atlas mountains around Azilal.

But for many people, a deeper exploration into the heart of the High Atlas mountains is much more appealing. So here is a sample route: Marrakech → Azilal → Imilchil → Isli → Tislit → Midelt → Errachidia → Sahara.

Of course, the actual route will depend on road conditions and the time of the year – as well as on what kind of vehicle you have with you.
