Lake Tislit, Morocco: A High Atlas Lake Near Imilchil
The smaller of the twin lakes — a protected high-altitude wetland, part of Imilchil’s cultural landscape and of its best-known legend.
Nestled up in Morocco’s eastern High Atlas, near the mountain town of Imilchil, is the lake called Tislit. Circumnavigating a rugged mountainous environment, Tislit is one of those gems in the High Atlas that should not be missed by those looking for an alternative to the usual Moroccan tourist destinations.
Where Is Lake Tislit?
Lake Tislit is nestled near the mountain town of Imilchil in the eastern High Atlas.
The lake is located in a high-altitude rocky environment surrounded by hills and peaks.
The landscape is far different from the medinas of Marrakech or Fes and as nothing compared to the golden dunes of the Sahara.
This is a land of altitude, mountains and high plains.
Lake Tislit and Imilchil
Lake Tislit is intrinsically linked to Imilchil, both geographically and culturally.
Imilchil is the capital of the Aït Hdiddu, an Amazigh community of the eastern High Atlas.
The area is perhaps most famous for the Imilchil marriage festival, although the history and background of this tradition is far more complex than the Westernised interpretation often given to naive tourists.
Lake Tislit is part of this cultural region.
The Legend of Isli and Tislit
Perhaps the most famous legend associated with these two lakes tells the story of two young lovers from rival families, who were kept from each other by their families.
The legend tells that the pair cried so hard over their fate that their tears formed two lakes: Isli and Tislit. Thus the names of the lakes are intrinsically linked to this local legend of love.
It should be noted, however, that while this is a lovely local legend, the tears of the lovers have nothing to do with the actual geology of the two lakes.
As part of your Morocco High Atlas road trip, do appreciate the local legend of Tislit, but separate it from the scientific facts.
The Landscape Around Tislit
What makes the scenery around Tislit so special is the scale of the landscape.
The lake is set in an expansive rocky environment, where the vegetation varies with the altitude and the time of year.
The area can be surprisingly green with high-altitude vegetation during warm seasons, or covered with snow and ice during winter.
This is a part of Morocco far removed from the usual tourist destinations.
Tislit as an Off-the-Beaten-Track Destination
Tislit is not a place most first-time visitors to Morocco will see. That is what makes it so interesting to more experienced travellers and those looking for an alternative to the usual Morocco tourist trail.
A tour of the area including Imilchil and Tislit could be combined with a number of other off-the-beaten-track destinations in the eastern High Atlas, away from the usual Sahara circuit:
- High Atlas landscapes
- Amazigh communities
- Mountain agriculture
- High-altitude lakes
- Off-road driving
- Old villages
- Pastoral landscape
Visiting Lake Tislit Responsibly
Tislit is part of a natural ecosystem and landscape, and visitors should take care not to disturb the local flora and fauna.
Do not leave rubbish around the lake, respect private property (livestock and land), do not touch or disturb wildlife, and always ask permission before taking photos of people.
Also keep in mind that weather conditions in the mountains can be unpredictable.
Tislit and a High Atlas Road Trip
For adventurous travellers, a visit to Tislit can be part of a wider road trip through the eastern High Atlas.
A suggested itinerary (subject to road conditions and season) could be: Midelt → Imilchil → Tislit → Isli → eastern High Atlas.
Such a road trip is best done as a private tour rather than a group tour, so that the driver can decide the route and itinerary according to road conditions.
Why Visit Lake Tislit?
Tislit offers something that is becoming increasingly rare in today’s world: space.
There are no crowded palaces or medinas to contend with here, just a lake, a wide-open vista and a unique cultural landscape different from anything you’ll see in the medinas of Marrakech or Fes.
For those willing to get off the beaten track in Morocco, this place can be one of the most memorable highlights of a Morocco mountain tour.

Visiting Tislit well
- Protected ground: Tislit is a Ramsar wetland since 2005 — a fragile high-altitude ecosystem. Stay on paths.
- Go with a private driver: the route is better decided on the day, against road conditions.
- Winter is serious: snow and ice are normal; ask locally before setting out.
- Wildlife: do not disturb animals or shoreline birds, and carry out all waste.
