Ifrane: Little Switzerland
Alpine chalets, cedar air and ski slopes at 1,600 metres — Ifrane is the Morocco almost nobody expects.
The unexpected mountain town
Built as a French hill station and now home to Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane looks like an Alpine postcard — sloped roofs, gardens, lakes and clean cold air. In winter it is Morocco's ski town; in summer it is the cool escape from Fes, an hour north.
Ifrane works as a stop between Fes and the desert road south, paired with Azrou and its cedar forest. Winter travellers get snow; everyone else gets altitude, calm and remarkably good air.
Highlights
- Alpine town walk — chalets, gardens and the stone lion landmark.
- Michlifen slopes — skiing and snow play in winter.
- Dayet Aoua lake — birdlife and picnic shores nearby.
- Cedar air — the forests begin just south of town.
- University quarter — cafés and a young international buzz.
Good to know
How to get there
Ifrane sits on the Fes–Midelt road, about an hour from Fes by grand taxi or bus. With Abrid, it is a natural pause inside any Fes-to-desert route.
How long to stay
We recommend half a day passing through, or a night in ski season. It is a pause, not a base.
Best time to visit
Winter (December–February) for snow and skiing; spring and autumn for mild walking weather; summer for cool escape from the lowlands.
