Imlil: Gateway to Toubkal

The trailhead village beneath North Africa's highest summit — mule tracks, walnut valleys and the start of every Toubkal trek.

Where the mountain starts

Every Toubkal ascent begins in Imlil: mules are loaded, guides check boots, and the track climbs through walnut groves toward the high refuge. Even without summit plans, the village is worth a day — waterfalls, terraced fields and guesthouse rooftops facing the highest ridge in North Africa.

Imlil pairs with Ourika for a two-valley Atlas stay, or with a Toubkal trek for the full summit. Tell us your fitness and dates and we set the pace honestly.

Highlights

  • Toubkal trailhead — the track to the 4,167 m summit starts here.
  • Mule tracks — day walks to Armed village and the waterfalls.
  • Walnut valley — terraces and orchards below the peaks.
  • Amazigh guesthouses — rooftop dinners facing Toubkal.
  • Summit sunrise — for trekkers, via the high refuge.
How we recommend experiencing Imlil. Arrive for lunch, afternoon acclimatisation walk, night in a guesthouse — then trek or relax. How long: one night minimum; two to three days for the Toubkal summit. What travellers miss: the valley is the experience, not just the trailhead — walk it slowly. How we connect it: Marrakech ? Imlil ? Toubkal, or Imlil + Ourika as an Atlas pairing.

Good to know

How to get there

Imlil lies about 90 minutes south of Marrakech by mountain road, served by grand taxis and buses. With Abrid, your driver brings you door to door and your guide meets you in the village.

How long to stay

We recommend one night for the valley, two to three days with a Toubkal ascent. Altitude and weather set the real schedule — we advise before you commit.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn (roughly May–October) for trekking; winter brings snow and needs proper equipment. Valley walks work most of the year.

Yes — the national park requires a certified local guide for the summit, plus mules for gear. Our trek includes both. See the trek.

Can beginners trek from Imlil?

Valley walks suit everyone; the summit needs good fitness and two to three days. Tell us your level and we set an honest plan — there is no shame in the valley option.

How does Imlil fit a wider trip?

As a two-to-three-day Atlas break inside any Marrakech-based itinerary, or paired with Ourika. Plan it here.
