Safi: Pottery, Port & Sardines
Ceramics kilns, sardine boats and ocean ramparts — Safi is a working Atlantic port most travellers never meet.
The coast at work
Safi is famous across Morocco for two things: pottery — the city's workshops fire the blue-and-white ceramics sold in every souk — and sardines, landed in industrial quantities at one of the country's great fishing ports. Portuguese sea walls still guard the old town, and the medina hums with work rather than tourism.
Safi fits between Essaouira and El Jadida on a slow Atlantic drive. Come for the pottery quarter and the port; stay for grilled sardines where the boats land.
Highlights
- Pottery quarter — kilns and workshops of Safi ceramics.
- Fishing port — sardine boats and the afternoon landing.
- Sea ramparts — Portuguese-era walls over the ocean.
- Medina — working-town souks without the tourist press.
- Grilled sardines — eaten where they are landed.

Safi questions
Is Safi worth visiting?
Yes for pottery lovers and anyone driving the Atlantic coast — the kilns and working port are genuinely different from the polished medinas. Half a day is plenty.
Can I buy pottery directly from workshops?
Yes — the pottery quarter sells from the workshops, often cheaper than the big-city souks. Your driver helps with fair prices and safe packing for the road.
