El Jadida: The Portuguese City
A UNESCO sea fortress with an underground cistern of light — El Jadida is the coast's great half-day surprise, south of Casablanca.
A fortress with light inside
Built by the Portuguese as Mazagan, El Jadida's walled city is a UNESCO site unlike any other medina in Morocco — ramparts over the surf, a Manueline church, and the famous cistern: a vaulted underground chamber where a single shaft of light crosses dark water. Photographers plan whole mornings around it.
El Jadida sits an easy hop from Casablanca with direct trains, and pairs with Safi further south on a slow coastal drive. Half a day covers the fortress; add Deauville beach for a full one.
Highlights
- Portuguese cistern — the vaulted chamber of light and water.
- Sea ramparts — bastions and ocean views around the old city.
- Church of the Assumption — Manueline stonework by the sea.
- Deauville beach — long sand south of the walls.
- Old medina lanes — quieter than any big-city souk.
Good to know
How to get there
Direct trains run from Casablanca, and buses and grand taxis connect El Jadida with Safi and Marrakech. With Abrid, the fortress stop is folded into your coastal route with private transport.
How long to stay
We recommend half a day for the fortress and cistern, a full day with Deauville beach. Most travellers sleep in Casablanca or continue south.

Year-round; spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are generally the most comfortable.

El Jadida questions
Is El Jadida worth visiting?
Yes for the cistern alone — it is one of Morocco's most photographed interiors — plus a compact sea fortress you can cover in half a day from Casablanca.
Can I visit on a day trip from Casablanca?
Easily, by direct train or with your driver. Morning cistern light, ramparts, lunch, beach — back by evening. Add it here.
How does it combine with Safi and Essaouira?
Perfectly in one coastal line: Casablanca ? El Jadida ? Safi ? Essaouira. We sequence stays and driving days around it.
