Draa: Valley of Kasbahs

Endless palm groves and caravan-era kasbahs along Morocco's longest river — the Draa is the green road to Zagora.

The green road south

Fed by Atlas snowmelt, the Draa strings oasis after oasis down to the desert — one of Morocco's longest palm corridors, studded with ancient ksour and kasbahs from the trans-Saharan caravan trade. Villages here still live on dates, gardens and the river's rhythm.

The valley is the approach to Zagora and its desert camps: Agdz, Tamnougalt and a dozen smaller ksour unfold along the road. Slow down for it — travellers who rush the Draa miss half their desert trip.

Highlights

  • Palm grove drives — the green corridor from Agdz south.
  • Tamnougalt kasbah — the valley's great fortified village.
  • Caravan history — ksour from the old trade road.
  • Oasis walks — gardens and channels with a local guide.
  • Date season — harvest time in the palmeraies.
How we recommend experiencing the Draa. Drive it slowly with stops at Tamnougalt and the viewpoints, walk one grove, sleep toward Zagora. How long: half a day's drive-through, plus the desert night beyond. What travellers miss: walking the groves — the valley rewards feet, not windows. How we connect it: Ouarzazate ? Draa ? Zagora is the classic two-day desert line.

Good to know

How to get there

The valley road runs south from Agdz toward Zagora, served by buses and grand taxis from Ouarzazate. With Abrid, the Draa drive is the scenic first half of your Zagora desert loop.

How long to stay

We recommend half a day driving through with stops, folded into the Zagora two-day loop. Dedicated Draa nights suit slow travellers.

Best time to visit

Autumn harvest season is special; spring brings green groves. Summer days are very hot — drive early.
