Zagora: The Quick Sahara

Desert camps a short drive south, the Draa palm groves behind you and Timbuktu on the signpost — Zagora is the Sahara for short trips.

Desert nights, short drive

Merzouga's great dunes take a full expedition to reach — Zagora offers the desert night in two days from Marrakech. Camel trek at sunset, camp under the stars, sunrise over the dunes, and the famous painted sign counting the days to Timbuktu in the town centre.

Be honest about the trade: Zagora's dunes are smaller than Erg Chebbi's, but the journey is half as long and the Draa Valley road getting there is half the experience. With more days, we point you to Merzouga instead.

Highlights

  • Desert camp night — dinner, drums and stars.
  • Sunset camel trek — into the dunes for golden hour.
  • Timbuktu sign — the famous "52 days" painted marker.
  • Draa palm groves — the green valley on the approach.
  • Sunrise dunes — dawn over the sand before the drive back.
How we recommend experiencing Zagora. Leave Marrakech early via the Atlas and Ait Benhaddou, camel in at sunset, camp night, sunrise, Draa Valley drive back. How long: two days minimum from Marrakech. What travellers miss: the Draa road itself — most eyes are on the dunes, but the valley delivers half the trip. How we connect it: Marrakech ? Atlas ? Zagora in two days; Merzouga if you have three or more.

Good to know

How to get there

Zagora lies south of Ouarzazate down the Draa Valley road, served by buses and grand taxis. With Abrid, the two-day loop from Marrakech runs privately with camp and meals arranged.

How long to stay

We recommend two days from Marrakech for one desert night. Longer trips should look at Merzouga's bigger dunes instead.

Best time to visit

Autumn through spring for comfortable desert nights; summer days are extremely hot. Winter nights get cold — camps provide blankets.

Zagora questions

Zagora or Merzouga?

Two days: Zagora. Three or more: Merzouga's dunes are far bigger and worth the extra drive. Tell us your days and we advise honestly. Ask here.

What should I pack for the camp night?

Layers for cold nights, sun protection, a headlamp and a small overnight bag — the desert kit list is in our packing guide.

Is the Timbuktu sign real?

The painted sign is a beloved landmark rather than a timetable — but the caravan history behind it is real. Worth the photo.

Want to include Zagora in your Morocco trip?

Tell us your dates — we run the two-day desert loop with camp, meals and transport handled.
