Rabat: The Calm Capital
Kasbahs, minarets and ocean air — Rabat is Morocco's most relaxed imperial city, and a graceful place to start or end a trip.
Empire with sea air
Capitals are rarely this easy. Rabat pairs imperial monuments with an Atlantic coastline, wide avenues and far fewer crowds than Casablanca, an hour south. The blue-and-white Kasbah des Oudaias hangs over the river mouth, and the unfinished Hassan Tower has watched over the city for eight centuries.
Rabat fits naturally at either end of an imperial route — fly into Rabat-Salé, ease in with the kasbah and Chellah, then continue to Meknes and Fes. For the combined coastal picture, see also our Rabat & Casablanca route overview.
Highlights
- Kasbah des Oudaias — blue lanes, Andalusian garden and river views.
- Hassan Tower & Mausoleum — the minaret that was never finished.
- Chellah — Roman and medieval ruins among storks and gardens.
- Medina and souks — compact and calm by Moroccan standards.
- Atlantic corniche — sea air, cafés and nearby beaches.

How to get there
Rabat has its own airport (Rabat-Salé) and sits on the main rail line with fast trains from Casablanca, Tangier and Fes. With Abrid, airport pickup and the onward route are already arranged.
How long to stay
We recommend one day for the kasbah, tower and Chellah. It doubles perfectly as a soft-landing arrival day.
Best time to visit
Year-round, with spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) generally the most pleasant; the ocean keeps summers mild.

Rabat questions
Is Rabat worth visiting?
Yes as a calm imperial stop or arrival day — the kasbah and Chellah are genuinely lovely, and the city is far more relaxed than Casablanca. It rarely needs more than a day.
Can I fly directly into Rabat?
Rabat-Salé airport serves several European and domestic routes; most long-haul travellers still arrive via Casablanca, an hour away by train. We arrange pickup from either. Plan your arrival.
How do Rabat and Casablanca combine?
Naturally: land in Casablanca, see the Hassan II Mosque, continue to Rabat for the night. Our route overview covers the pair.
